ingage smartLinks & Featured Links

What are smartLinks?
smartLinks are text based hyperlinks that are found throughout the copy of your publication. Our proprietary document conversion software automatically detects URLs that are typed in their standard format and makes them clickable hyperlinks. When the mouse is placed over the link, the linked text will be underlined and the pointer turns into a hand, signifying the presence of a web link.

What are Featured Links?
"Featured links" are manually drawn, either by the client in the PDF document, before submission to ingage, or by ingage, after the PDF is converted. A featured link is highlighted by a translucent box when the user hovers his or her mouse is placed over the linked area. This highlighting draws the user's attention to the linked area and may entice the user to click the link. A publisher would want to use a featured link in order to draw attention to advertisers or products or other links of significance.

What is the difference between a smartLink and a featured link?
A smartLink is unobtrusive and simply provides the user with the standard functionality that would be expected when coming across a typewritten URL in an e-mail or among web page copy.

A Featured Link, conversely, calls out for attention. When an area on the page is designated as a Featured Link and the user's mouse enters this area, the link springs to life and highlights, instantly calling the user's attention. Featured links, by design, are as nonobstructive to the publication page as possible, until the user's mouse enters the linked area. Our goal is to maintain the integrity of the page design while still drawing user attention to featured areas on the page.

As of version 4.6.1, ingage Publication Premium is search engine compatible. With this capability Featured Links are recognizable to search engine crawlers. Featured Links provide our clients an added value to pass on to their advertisers through crawlable backlinks.

Why did you create smartLinks?
smartLinks were created specifically to aid our clients that have business directories, employee directories or other publications that could contain hundreds or even thousands of web or email links. In these situations we can provide active hyperlinks automatically, and at no additional cost.

Why did you create Featured Links?
Featured Links exist for the sole purpose of providing access to outside web pages or documents from within ingage Publication Premium. Our clients can choose to link to as many URLs or documents as they see fit. Linking to external resources can not only provide value to our client and the client's advertisers through increased web traffic, but can also add to the user experience.

How do smartLinks work?
smartLinks were created by extending our existing smart Search full text search engine. Essentially, we added the ability for the ingage Publication search engine to recognize URLs and instantly convert them to live hyperlinks.

How do Featured Links work?
Featured Links are added to the publication content either by the client, using the link tool in Adobe Acrobat Professional to draw the links in the PDF file before submission (click here for more information), or by ingage at the client's direction after submission. Once the links are drawn, our conversion process will recognize these links and activate them in the converted publication.

How much do smartLinks cost?
smartLinks are included at no cost. It is a feature that we have created to provide added value for our customers.

How much do Featured Links cost?
Since the link discovery process is automated, there is no charge for featured links that are drawn by our clients in the PDF file submitted for conversion.
